Hydrangea arborescens, commonly known as Smooth Hydrangea, Wild Hydrangea, or Sevenbark, is a small to medium sized, deciduous shrub up to 3 m tall that is native to the eastern United States and northeastern Asia.*

Hydrangea arborescens is a deciduous shrub of the family Hydrangeaceae, native to the rich, shaded woodlands and stream banks of the eastern United States. It grows to about one to two meters tall and bears broad, rounded clusters of small white flowers in summer; the popular ornamental cultivar "Annabelle" is a selection of this species. The genus name Hydrangea comes from the Greek hydor ("water") and angeion ("vessel" or "jar"), a reference to the small, cup-shaped seed capsules; the species epithet arborescens is Latin for "becoming woody" or "tree-like". Carl Linnaeus formally described the plant in his Species Plantarum of 1753.
